ThoughtBubble Comic Convention 2013
The worlds best convention!
The journey - the story - the photo's!
Friday morning we got out of bed, slightly hung over and tired after all of the wine on the Thursday night. We had a nice calm, if slightly rushed coffee before hastily packing all of the stuff we needed for the weekend. 2 cosplays for me and enough clothes to go out on two evenings, Kim brought enough for four cosplays! There was rushing abut making sure all of the lizards and snakes that live with us were properly fed and watered before we set off. At just after ten in the morning a taxi arrived and whisked us off to Central station where we hung about waiting for a train!
Eventually (about an hour and a half) after we left Newcastle, our train pulled into Leeds station. Once there we had the arduous task of pulling our suitcases with wheels for ten minutes to the hotel we were staying in. We had a nice double room in the Jury's inn, facing the same direction as last year, but a couple of floors lower down. It was a nice warm room.
We unpacked our cases and had coffee. After coffee we went out shopping.
This is the view over the river rom close to our hotel.
We bought bits of ribbon, last minute cosplay supplies, Checked out the awesome camera shop in the Corn Exchange and had a look round the nice new trinity shopping centre
The centre was nice and new and quite pretty really.
We found this lovely sculpture of a horse stood on a pedestal.
Following looking about here, we decided that we would check out the Christmas market. At first we thought it was a bit of a joke, but as we got round the corner it was quite nice. Not nice in the way that the Christmas market in Birmingham has been, but certainly nicer than what we have in our home city. Since we had both lived in Germany, we decided to stop and have some currywurst there.
It wasn't quite as nice as I remembered, but it was still lovely.
After all of that excitement we decided to head back to the hotel again. We were going to be going out in the evening and had a little bit of stuff to do first. Back in the room, I sat in the bath for ages letting the lovely pink colouring that i needed my hair to be soak in and give me a nice deep vivid colour. I was desiring pink hair, but somewhat think that I overdid it. It was more violet ^_^
So, hair done, nails professionally manicured by Kim, we hit town for the evening! First stop was 1871 bar, Where the thoughtbubble pre con takes place. There we spotted several people who would be at the convention over the weekend, but no-one we knew. We sat and had a couple of drinks.Me, drinking strawberry recorderlig the glass has strawberry and lime pieces in it too!
After about three drinks, we headed off down the road to the Viaduct showbar. We only stayed for a half in there and another half in blaydes before we decided we had had enough to drink. Me, outside of blaydes yard.
Once we had had enough, we sloped off to a take away for pizza to take to the hotel with us.
Saturday started with a lie in, we must have slept until almost 8am! Almost unknown! We started the day with coffee, before popping out for breakfast in the riverside cafe that we usually use. The breakfasts weren't as good as we have had there in the past, they weren't so warm and the temperature in the cafe made them cold fast. I didn't enjoy it like I usually would. After breakfast we popped back to the hotel to get ready for the convention, Myself dressed as Fluttershy (my little pony) and kim dressed as Soarin (my little pony) Once ready we popped along to the haberdashery shop in the market for some safety pins.
A quick snap on the way to the Royal Armouries. We walked down to the Royal Armouries for the convention and joined the humongous queue of people still waiting to get their weekend passes and gain entry. I took a heap of pictures while we were in the queue, here is a selecion...Eventually, we gained access to the building, collected some green weekend wristbands and managed to get ourselves into the main convention hall. There was the regular eclectic collection of anime/manga, comic, movie, artist tables and just pure awesomeness. We managed to find the melon of chance relatively quickly, That's one of my favourite tables year after year!
Kim taking a turn at "The melon of chance"
A few tables further up, we found this wonderful teddy bear
I mean, really how cute is that!! It's adorable!
So, we spent a good while in there going up and down the dealer and artist tables and memorising where things were that we would like to come pick up later (obviously we never buy on our first look around, we wait until day 2 for that) We browsed closer at a few tables with super cute pictures and comics and looked over a few random things, chatted with some stall holders too. After more than an hour of frustratingly trying to break through the crowds we went out to the lobby where we got a couple more pictures with a group of cosplayers.
Random group of cosplayers! We went over to the Royal armouries hall afterwards, not as big as the main hall, but still awesome. In there we found more artists including one that I had draw me an anime version of myself, Ryuuza who I have known for quite a long time, Angelkat's stall with more people i know on it (you donna) and the amazing dr. Geoffs steampunk museum.
We met Rainbow dash in there. Rainbow dash was a cutie ^_^
Okay, so after another hour in there, we went back to the hotel so Kim could change cosplay into a tie fighter pilot (star wars) before we went back to the con.We went across to the new hall when we got back. It looked like a hall that has sat disused for some time, the walls were unfinished and it had that sort of feel to it!
I took a few photo's of people in there,The guy who created "the clockwatchers"
The girl with the cutest apron ever!
the sweetest lolita ever. You can get toothache looking at her!
Back outside, Half three in the afternoon, its getting dark and its busy
A short while later,
Kim the Tie fighter pilot.
On the way back to the hotel again, so we could prepare to go out for the evening, we bumped into
The Doctor (one of him anyway)On a side note, we had expected with the convention coinciding with the day of the doctor and the 50th anniversary there would be loads of doctor who's, but there weren't.
Anyway, at the hotel we got ready for an evening out
, We were supposed to go to the cinema to watch The day of the doctor, so we decided to have some food first! On the way, we found this beautiful ceiling reflection of some christmas lights!Further round, we found a burrito shop in he wierdest food court we have ever seen. Needless to say, mine was lovely. Kim had chosen different fillings though and his wasn't as nice!
We slunk along to the cinema at half seven, 20 minutes before DR who was due to be on. We were issued a refund and some free cinema vouchers as an apology that the BBC software that had been sent out wouldn't work with their projector. We were disappointed, but not overly so, I pointed out we could get a bottle of wine and watch it in out room, the cinema guy asked me what I drank, ran off and got me a bottle for the inconvenience. (thankyou cinema guy) So, laden with this bottle, we went and watched it in the room.
Afterwards, we went to the mid convention party.
We got there, there was a massive queue outside off the corn exchange, everyone seemed to have had the same idea... Also to make matters harder, last year the party was epic, they used the bottom and ground floors of the corn exchange and we all had a great night. There were several bars and some eateries in there. This year however, there wasn't enough security so hay had to limit the amount of people permitted in the building, only the bottom floor was accessible making the party area much smaller. There were just two bars, the one we were stood at actually ran out of glasses at one point and we waited ages for the three bar staff to find some and get round to serving us. There was one place to buy food, hot dogs... All in all, it was a shambolic affair compared to last year!
We went elsewhere. Back to the viaduct bar where this was taken.
Then to another bar that i don't recall the name of before we once again had pizza and called it a night!
Sunday started slowly with a late rise from bed. After a cup of coffee, I hassled Kim to get dressed in our cosplays for the day, He was the first doctor (dr. who) and I was Stocking (panty and stocking) Then, we packed up our cases, tidied round the room, had more coffee (yes we really are just fuelled by coffee) and checked out of the hotel. We left our bags at the hotel obviously and wen't out into the cold (literally 3 celcius) well underdressed but looking for fun!
Walking to the convention venues!
When we got there, we decided to do all of the halls in reverse order and collect up the things we had spotted yesterday that we wanted. First though, we paid a visit to a couple of absolutely lovely girls who had came from Poland especially for the convention. They had asked us to call back past their table (they wanted to see our cosplays)
This is us with them.
A while later, Kim was colouring in...
He was having so much fun making a character! And having coffee like a gentleman with his monacle!
After here, until the cosplay contest, I spent a lot of time looking for cosplays to photograph...
Here is a selection.
Then we bumped into a friend!
Lydia and her friend! This little girl wins the Amy prize for best dr who cosplayer!I bought an awesome original fanart from this lady!
After this point, we went inside for the cosplay contest and masquerade. We all assumed that it would be in the same place as previous years, but the theatre entrance had been moved... Luckily someone came and told us! So, in the theater, the masquerade was a good laugh and the contest went smoothly. I took loads of pictures but to be honest a lot of the outdoor ones were better. so i'm only posting a few of them here.
After this, we just went for some food and our train home. Ending a beautiful, fun weekend! All of these photo's were taken by Myself and Kim.
